Oliver Herring

This man somehow gets strangers off the street to spit food coloring into the air and all over themselves while he photographs the odd display. Oliver plays with the idea of portrait manipulation and has done something very unique. The process between the stranger and the photographer is similar in each trial however different indeed. He has a way with getting people to trust him completely, and in some cases in a short amount of time.

I think we all want to do stuff that we are too shy to really do, but deep down we have it in us. These experiences here in the studio, because they’re so unstructured, they allow for these things to happen. I really like the sense of adventure in the air when things are not scripted, when anything can happen. Arturo Herrera

This man uses an approach to his artwork/photography that I have never seen. He takes macro shots of his small painted illustrations and then soaks the film in water/coffee. Then he puts the submerged film into the sunlight. The result is astonishing imagery. He spoke of how emotional life, memory and desire are all important aspects of his work. He is interested in the ambiguity and fragmenting of images creating basic abstractions. This leads to a potential for images to communicate with the individual. I am very interested in his process and I would like to experiment in this medium.

Tom Scott

Tom went to the beach and produced beautiful pictures of tidal illustrations in the sand. These are all familiar markings that anyone who has visited a coastline has seen, however Tom took the time to look again. He scoured the beach over 200 times in search of stories created where the ocean meets land.

Lux Boreal International Danza Contemporanea
On Wed 2.6.08 I along with others in the beginning acting class decided to attend the Lux Boreal International Danza Contemporanea. Two dance performers came to campus and informed us about living in Tijuana and some of the issues that are going on in their country. This included border issues. They showed us clips of their previous performances and ended the hour with a live duet of their work. It was very colorful and repetitious which got their point across.

I have a few ideas on what to include in my book for this semesters project in artist books class. One idea that I was thinking about would include images that I am creating for a portrait project I am working on. I would include the images along with writings describing the people in the images. Maybe I could ask the subjects I photograph interesting questions about their life or ask them what they want me to include with their mug shot. Questions from left field or ones not normally asked would be interesting to include.



I also wanted to create a book that included photographs of art pieces that I have compiled over the years. I would include mostly drawings, but some paintings as well. I thought about taking the drawings/paintings and altering them in photoshop and illustrator and adding what we have learned with text in indesign to make them more interesting. I want to alter the text greatly giving it an abstract form of communication. One that is far from the standard linear columns.



Another idea I thought about was to implement landscapes of downtown san diego and all of the interesting city street culture. I spent a large amount of time in the city this winter break and I found many stunning images within the architecture and city streets. I would love to shoot more photographs in the city and somehow apply it to the project and write something worthy of print.
